Duxbury Beach is a four and a half mile long barrier beach with two small private communities, Gurnet & Saquish, at the far southern end. These two communities lie within the Town of Plymouth. The DPD Beach Operations function is to provide endangered species protection, access management, shore patrol, search and rescue, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and environmental protection.
Endangered/Threatened Species Program
The endangered and threatened species program is tightly integrated with DPD Beach Operations. Having this unique vetted program in place via the Duxbury Beach Management and Conservation Plan allows the Town to lease Duxbury Beach from the land owner, Duxbury Beach Reservation Inc. It also enables the Town to sell beach permits and provide safe and appropriate pedestrian, dog, and permitted off-road vehicle (ORV) access to the beach, that may otherwise not be allowed during the nesting season for endangered species located on Duxbury Beach. There are few beaches within the Massachusetts that have similar successful programs. The annual nesting season for Duxbury Beach endangered species is April 1st to September 15th.
