Officers Encounter Man with Knife

Duxbury – July 5th, 2022

On July 5th, 2022, Officers observed a man behaving erratically in the area of 2 Tremont St (Route 3A). A detective in an unmarked cruiser observed the man in the middle of the road jumping in and out of traffic. At one point, the man ran towards the highway and appeared to attempt to gain access to two vehicles stopped at the off-ramp. Noticing an object in his hand, which was later determined to be an automatic knife, the detective requested back-up, identified himself, and made contact with the individual. The individual was known to officers as Johnny Lewis Jr., age 37, of Saugus.

Lewis complied with officers’ initial orders and placed the knife down on the hood of one of the police cruisers. Officers then began to place him in handcuffs, at which point Lewis lunged for the knife, causing a significant struggle. During the struggle, two officers suffered minor injuries which required transport to the hospital. The officers were later released and are back on duty. Lewis was also transported to the hospital for an evaluation and will be charged with the following offenses.

  1. Disorderly Conduct
  2. Disturbing the Peace
  3. Resisting Arrest
  4. Assault and Battery on a Police Officer
  5. Carrying a Dangerous Weapon
