Officer on Foot Patrol Discovers Hazmat Incident

Officer Steven Amado was on foot patrol by Rite Aid when he was alerted by the Pharmacist about an unusual odor coming from the drive through area. When he went check the area he could smell a chemical odor. Officer Amado quickly evacuated the building as a precaution. While doing so, he along with several employees began to experience symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. Duxbury Fire Department was dispatched to the scene along with the State Hazmat Team. It was discovered that the source was a package delivered to the pharmacy. A ripped chemical ice pack leaked on the Styrofoam cooler used to preserve medications which resulted in a hazardous chemical reaction. Employees were treated and released from the hospital. Officer Amado was treated on scene.
