On Saturday, August 16, 2008 Officer Melvin Dyer was directing traffic at the Marshfield Fair and was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop. The incident occurred at the intersection of Main and South River Streets. Officer Dyer was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries nine days later.
