Duxbury's Commitment to Safety

The Duxbury Police Department supports the Governor's Highway Safety Division in its effort to make our roadways safer.

The mission of the Executive Office of Public Safety's
Governor's Highway Safety Division (GHSB)
is to reduce fatalities, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes on the roadways of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. HSD is part of the Office of Grants & Research under the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS). We administer the federally-funded highway grant programs of the EOPSS.

The Duxbury Police Department is committed to the following HSD Campaigns:

 #1 Safety Belts

Massachusetts is stepping up enforcement of traffic laws, such as safety belt use, by providing law enforcement agencies with funds to increase their traffic patrols. Massachusetts law requires that everyone in a motor vehicle be properly restrained. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that every passenger under 16 years old is wearing a safety belt. Officers may stop any vehicle in which a child under 12 years old is not wearing a safety belt or is not in a child safety seat.

Education and enforcement can have a significant impact on safety belt use. We encourage your community group, police department, government agency or health-related organization to try one of the above mentioned ideas in your community. By increasing safety belt use, we will reduce motor vehicle deaths and injuries and economic loss in Massachusetts.

# 2 You Drink & Drive.  You Lose.

There were 429 motor vehicle-related fatalities in Massachusetts in 2006.  Forty-one percent of these deaths involved the use of alcohol or other drugs, equal to the national rate of 41%. To reduce impaired driving, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security's
Highway Safety Division (EOPSS-HSD) has a statewide campaign called
Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

This campaign coordinates extra state and local traffic enforcement, paid and earned media, and community education during three-week mobilizations.

# 3 Child Passenger Safety (CPS)

Are you and your child passengers properly restrained while driving?

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages 3 to 14 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). An average of 5 children age 14 and younger were killed and 568 injured in motor vehicle crashes each day across the United States in 2005. Even a sudden stop can seriously injure a child who is not riding securely in the right type of child safety seat.

State and local police and others involved in child passenger safety (CPS) work continuously to educate parents and caregivers on how to safely transport children in motor vehicles. They are also ready to enforce the Massachusetts CPS Law if necessary to protect children. In 2006 Massachusetts drivers were issued 1,060 CPS Law violations for unrestrained children.
