Investigating a Crash Scene

Total Station
Crash investigation instruments

We measure a crash scene using a Total Station which is a high precision instrument. This instrument has a narrow laser beam to enable us to take accurate measurements, even through obstacles such as chain link fences or trees. The computer software allows the Reconstructionist to recreate a crash scene to scale and generate the scene in 3D. Once a scene is drawn it may be animated, giving investigators and prosecutors a recreation of events.

The computer software also enables the Reconstructionist to formulate calculations using over 1000 equations. These equations allow the reconstructionist to calculate speed, energy, momentum, distance, time, acceleration, drag factor, and more.
