Duxbury Beach is a four and a half mile long barrier beach with two small private communities, Gurnet & Saquish, at the far southern end which lies within the Town of Plymouth. The Harbormaster Beach Unit is charged with the overall year round access and management of Duxbury Beach.
Endangered/Threatened Species Program:
This program is tightly integrated with the Beach Unit daily operations. Having this unique vetted program in place via the Duxbury Beach Management and Conservation Plan (the “Management Plan”) allows the Town to lease the beach from the land owner (Duxbury Beach Reservation Inc.), sell beach permits, and provide safe and appropriate pedestrian, dog, and permitted off-road vehicle (ORV) access to a beach that may otherwise not be allowed during the nesting season. There are few beaches within the Massachusetts that have similar successful programs which provide some access during the Endangered/Threatened species nesting period which runs April 1st to September 15th annually.
